SOME OF OUR DESTINATIONS IN SYRIA

DAMASCUS

Syria's capital claims to be the world's oldest continually inhabited city. Take to the cobbled streets to explore the atmospheric bazaars, coffee shops, the Umayyad Mosque, St. Paul window, and Hanania church (Anania).

Damascus, Syria's capital, claims to be the world's oldest continually inhabited city. Take to the cobbled streets to explore the atmospheric bazaars, coffee shops, the Umayyad Mosque, St. Paul window, and Hanania church (Anania). Damascus witnessed a great number of historic periods, the Aramean, the Hellenistic, the Roman, and the Byzantine, during which many churches were built, but its golden age became at the dawn of Islam with Umayyad era (661-750) when it became the capital of the huge Empire extending from Spain to India. After which came the Abbasids, Fatemide, Seljoukide, Atabek, Ayoubite, Mamluk, Ottoman, and French period. It passed through intervals of splendour and decadence, but it remained always a big town and true representative of the current civilization.

HAMA

At an altitude of 300 m and a distance of 300 km north of Damascus, Hama tells a story of long lasting love between the town and the river Orontes, typified by the huge Norais (river wheels) on its banks. It seems that since the fourth millennium BC. Amorites used to dwell on these banks and to drink from the river water.

Arameans established there one of their most ancient and most powerful petty Kingdoms. Hittites, Assyrians, Bablyonians, Persians, Grees, Romans, and Byzantines followed them. The Arabs camesince the dawn of Islam and Islamic civilization flourished there under various rulers. It was briefly occupied by the French during the mandate.

HOMS

Little has changed in the 800 years since the Crusader knights built their spectacular castle of Krak des Chevaliers. Wander around its impressive fortifications before heading to Hama for the night.

Homs is at an altitudes of 495m above the sea level, and at a distance of 160km north of Damascus. It lies mid-way between Damascus and Aleppo. Homs has very great importance due to its economic and strategic position in the middle of the various Syrian regions. Its history is a very long one, as witnessed by the many caves and catombs found beneath it. Since 2300BC. Amorites, Hittites, Assyrians and Caldaneans have passed there. A cave found at tell Aboul Saboun Contains the tombs of the members of local Arab family during the roman period, the family of Shamsjaram. Homs is the birthplace of Roman Empresses Julia Domna and Julia Mammaea and the philosopher Longinus.

ALEPPO

With its remarkable souq, interesting architecture and beautiful mosques, there is much to explore in the city of Aleppo. Visit the Citadel, which dominates the skyline and provides fantastic views of the city below.

On latitude 63 North and longitude 36 East, Aleppo is at a distance of 350 km North of Damascus. It is also one of the oldest cities in the world. Paleotinic and Neolithic remains are to be found nearby. The kingdom of “ Arman”, believed to be Aleppo it self, and the kingdom of “Ebla” not far from it, are considered among the oldest kingdoms in the world. The Akkadian king “Naram sin” takes pride of a victory against them in the XVIIIth century B.C. during the Amorite period, Aleppo was the capital of “ Yamhad”. It was thereafter successively occupied by Hittites, Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks, Romans and Byzentines. During the Persian invasion of the Byzentine Empire in 440 A.D. , it was completely destroyed and rebuilt only during the Umayyad period after islam.

LATTAKIA

It is called in Syria the bride of the sea and contains the most important Syrian seaport. On the Mediterranean Sea, at the north of the Syrian coast, it was constructed by seleucos I Nicator, the first Seleucide king, and named after his mother Loadicea. Before that, there was at the same location a Phoenician town called “ Ramitha”.

Nearby, at Ras Shamra (the ancient Ugarit) has been discovered the oldest alphabet in the world. Thus, even though the city is a Hellenistic creation, the history of the site goes long before that era, having witnessed the Cananeans, Phoenician and other Arab related peoples, and merges with prehistory.

DARA'A

At 850 km above sea level and 100 km south opf Damascus, lies the town of Dera’a, capital of the Hauran province. This province has many archeological sites, belonging mostly to the roman period, the monuments of which are still very well preserved.

Bosra: A very old city, perhaps going back to more than 4000years, it is mentioned in the Amarna tablets of Akhnaton under the name of “Bohora”. Bosra Amphitheatre: It is the largest amphitheatre built by the Romans their Eastern provinces. It was constructed in the second Century A.D. and can seat, until now, more than 15000 spectators. Bosra Citadel: It is a fortress built around the amphitheatre at amphitheatre at various periods. Its square towers are from the Fatimide and Ayoubite periods and consitute a good example of Arab-Islamic military architecture.

SWEIDA

Sweida is a beautiful town, at an altitude of 1100m. at 90 km south –east of Damascus. It is built in black basalt stone and tells a long history of Seleucide, Nabatean, Roman and Byzantine civilizations. The Nabatean called it “ Sawada” (the black) and the Greek and roman called it “Dionysias”.

It is built in black basalt stone and tells a long history of Seleucide, Nabatean, Roman and Byzantine civilizations. The Nabatean called it “ Sawada” (the black) and the Greek and roman called it “Dionysias”. It is reputed for its orchards and vineyards, producing excellent apples, grapes and other fruits. Beside the old town, it has well constructed modern buildings.

The town of Shahba: A small ancient town at 75 km south – east of Damascus on the road to Sweida. It is the birthplace of the Roman Emperor Philip the Arab (244-249 A.D.). The town was renamed “ Philipopolis” in his honor and her greatly embellished it with temples, baths, palaces, arch of triumph and surrounding walls, the remains of which are still extant. The temple of goddess “Rome”, constructed in third century, is well preserved and has beautiful Corinthian column. Shahba is also reputed for its mosaic floor panels.

TARTOUS

On the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, at 90km south of Lattakia, Tartous is the second port of Syria. It is an old Phoenician town facing the island of Arwad. Liberated by the Arabs from Byzantine rule at the dawn of Islam, it was reoccupied by the Byzantine emperor Nicephor and liberated again by the Fatimides.

It was occupied by the crusaders and remained on their last strongholds in the east until liberated by the Mamluk Kalawoon in 1291AD. Tartous is very old town and it seems that human occupation of this site dates back more than 6000 years ago. Thus, it is full of archeological and historical monuments. Among the most important of these monuments, there is the Tartous Citadel on the seashore, which is used now as a museum, and the Great Mosque built with huge stones and adorned with distinctive minaret. The museum contains rich collections or archeological finds discovered in the region.

BANIAS

The beautiful town is at 55km south of Lattakia it is an old Phoenician town and harbor. Was known during the Hellenistic period under the name of ”Palania”. It is surrounded by green orchards and has many beautiful beaches. The mountains, with their green woods, rise abruptly above it. It has become now an important industrial town, with huge oil refinery, and oil export and import terminal.

Al-Marqab Castle: Know by the crusaders under the name of “ Al-Marqab’, it stand 6 km south east of Banias on a high hill, at an elevation of 500m. above the sea level, but directly overlooking the sea. A huge and strong fortress, looking from the sea as an immense ship, it has 14 towers in addition to the keep. The road to it through olive and pomegranate trees with many turns, is very picturesque. Gothic style vaults are used to support the ceiling of its big rooms. The castle was able to house more than one thousand soldiers with enough supplies to withstand five years and was directly connected to the sea by an underground tunnel. It was one of the last crusaders strongholds, liberated by the Mamluk Sultan Kalawoon in 1285 AD. Some inscriptions in Arabic, celebrating this victory may be found in one of the towers. The whole castle is in a relatively well-preserved state.
